SUMMARY

Al-Tawhid Brigade (Unity Brigade) was formed in Aleppo Province as a merger of some 35 smaller battalions, primarily organized as part of three brigades: the Fursan al-Jabal Brigade, the Daret Izza Brigade and the Ahrar al-Shamal Brigade. The Fursan al-Jabal Brigade operated in southwestern Aleppo province, near the border with Idlib province and the city of Atareb. The Daret Izza Brigade was primarily active west of Aleppo city. Ahrar al-Shamal cotrolled portions of the Kilis Corridor, a path from the the Bab al Salamah border crossing with Turkey close to Azaz town to Aleppo City, and had a presence in al-Bab, to the east of Aleppo City. Al-Tawhid Brigade claimed to have 3,500 fighters soon after its formation.

Al-Tawhid Brigade participated in non-state fighting against the PYD in Aleppo and Hasakah governorates (see Ahrar al-Sham, al-Tawhid Brigade, IS, Islamic Kurdish Front, Jabhat Fateh al-Sham – PYD, Ahrar al-Sham, al-Tawhid Brigade, IS, Jabhat Fateh al-Sham – PYD and al-Tawhid Brigade – PYD).

Al-Tawhid Brigade was led by defected Major Mohammed Hamadeen, who was also the leader of Ahrar al-Shamal Brigade. The al-Tawhid Brigade merged into the Islamic Front on November 22 2013. At the formation of the Islamic Front the Tawhid Brigade was a major component, but steadily weakened and fractured during 2014.

Al-Tawhid Brigade has been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organized violence. It is also considered part of the Syrian insurgents active in the intrastate and one-sided categories of UCDP organized violence.
