SUMMARY

The conflict between Khozam and Oulad Rachid revolved around the issue of land ownership; in this particular case control over the Am Zaafaye well. Both tribes are Arab and belong to the same livestock rearing community. The disagreement over the well had been simmering several months prior to the outbreak of fighting. During this period, the authorities launched repeated efforts to settle the dispute, none of which worked.

The fighting was brief in both time and space: it was confined to a week in November 2000, and played out solely in the vicinity of the disputed well. When the violence ceased, it was because the Government of Chad sent troops into the area to restore order.

The non-state conflict between Khozam and Oulad Rachid is first included in UCDP data in 2000. In November of that year, clashes between the groups led to the crossing of the threshold of 25 battle-related deaths.
