SUMMARY
The Ma'aliyah and the Rizeigat Baggara are both Arab tribes that herds cattle in South and East Darfur. The tension between the two tribes has been based on economic hardships, rivalry concerning land, and cattle thefts. Clashes have occurred repeatedly, often following accusations and instances of cattle theft. The large majority of fighting has taken place in East Darfur.
The non-state conflict between the Ma'aliyah and the Rizeigat Baggara was first included in UCDP data in 2002. Week-long clashes started when a policeman from the Rizeigat Baggara tribe was killed, clashes that subsequently crossed the 25 battle-related deaths threshold.
