SUMMARY

The Aguleri ethnic group is a sub group of the large Igbo ethnicity; they accordingly speak the Igbo language. The Aguleri ethnicity can be traced back to an ancient kingdom which was based in what is now Anambra state. The historical ties to the land on which the Aguleri have resided are strong; the present day Aguleri homeland is in the village named Aguleri in Anambra state. Historically the use of land has been an issue of great importance to the Aguleri group; several conflicts have been reported concerning the ownership of land.

The Aguleri group has been loosely organised during the violence it has been involved in, there has not been any centralized leadership, nor have there been any tactics or patterns of violence that has indicated any greater organizational structure. The violence has on the contrary been spontaneous and carried out by youths in a riot like fashion.

Despite the clear link to the Igbo ethnicity the Aguleri are not in any way allied to them. In fact, they are involved in land disputes with other ethnicities that are also sub groups of the Igbo ethnicity.

Aguleri has been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
