SUMMARY

Umuleri speaks the Igbo language and are located in Anambra state in the southern parts of Nigeria. The origin of Umuleri dates back several hundred years and is closely connected to the overarching ethnicity of Igbo. Umuleri are predominantly Christian and number about one million. The town of Umueri is home to a majority of the Umuleri population, the term Umuleri is used interchangeably as describing inhabitants of Umueri and people belonging to the Umuleri ethnicity.

Concerning the violence that the Umuleri have been involved in there has not been any centralised leadership, nor has there been any general tactics or patterns. Rather the violence has mostly been carried out by gangs of youths in a riot styled fashion.

The Umuleri have not had any ties to other groups in terms of violence, despite the common ancestry and shared language with the Igbo, and several sub groups of the Igbo ethnicity. In fact, some of the past conflicts have been fought between different sub groups of the Igbo ethnic family.

Umuleri has been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
