SUMMARY

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), until 2010 known as Action Congress (AC), was launched in September 2006 in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. The party brought together factions of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), the Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD), and the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

ACN was formed to create a stronger opposition to compete with the majority party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for political power. It is a progressive party, its motto “Justice, Peace and Progress” and its party symbol a broom. In the 2007 elections, it fielded a presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. AC finished third in both the presidential and parliamentary polls, after PDP and ANPP. It went on to contest the election results and refused to participate in the Yar’Adua (PDP) administration.

The supporters of ACN have been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
