SUMMARY
Turkana is a pastoralist group that according to some sources has a population around 600 000 whilst other reports a lower figure of 250 000 – 350 000. The Turkana lives in the dry northwest corner of Kenya and primarily in the Turkana district. They are a Nilotic people closely related to the Karamojong of Uganda and more remote relations to the Massai people. Most Turkana believes in traditional religion but about 15% are Christians. Neighbouring people such as; El Molo, Samburu, Pokoot, Rendille, Borana and Endo-Marakwet include both farmers and herders.
The Turkana live centre around livestock and cattle, camel, sheep and goats are all important as food. Also, livestock is essential for payment for bride, compensation for crimes and gifts at social occasions.
The Turkana has been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
