SUMMARY
The Pokot and the Turkana inhabits a part of Kenya where cattle raids and clashes between neighboring ethnic groups are fairly common. Most often the reason for clashes between the Pokot and the Turkana is cattle-rustling. As cattle are at the heart of the two societies and a necessity to be able to get married this sometimes leads to the stealing of cattle from a neighboring ethnic group. One reason for these feuds becoming bloody is that automatic weapons are outspread in the area.
The non-state conflict between Pokot and Turkana is first included in UCDP data in 1995. In December that year clashes between the two groups had resulted in more than 25 battle-related deaths.
