Summary of conflict Algeria: Islamic State

Algeria has since the early nineties been plauged by an ongoing campaign of violence perpetrated by Islamic extremists. Against this backdrop Al-Qaeda has had a presence in the country since the late nineties. During 2014 there was a split within the predominant al-Qaeda affiliate AQIM, one of the splinter groups, Jund al-Khilafah quickly pledged their alligiance to the Islamic State and their leader al-Baghdadi. The pledge was accepted in November 2014 thereby making the conflict in Algeria concerning the territory Islamic State active. The algerian government however were quick to act against the group, and by May 2015 a large part of the group had been eradicated by Algerian military forces.
