SUMMARY
The Hamar and the Ma'aliyah are two Arab communities inhabiting Darfur and South Kordofan. The Hamar community is a sedentary community whereas the Ma'aliyah primarily herd cattle. The communities usually have peaceful relations but clashes between them emerged in 2013. The fighting was sparked by a Ma'aliyah tribesman who wanted to graze his livestock on farmlands of the Hamar.
The non-state conflict between the Hamar and the Ma'aliyah was first included in UCDP data in 2013. In early December of that year, clashes between the two groups had resulted in more than 25 battle-related deaths.
