SUMMARY

In March 1998, external pressure to establish a regional authority in the Benadir region, reaching from the Gulf of Aden to the Juba River, led the Benadir Regional Supreme Council to name Hussein Ali Ahmed as governor of Mogadishu. Hussein Ali Ahmed was supported by subclans of the Abgal clan and particularly the Rer Matan subclan of the Wabuden of which he was a member. The forces of Hussein Ali Ahmed are hence clan members of a variety of Abgal subclans. In Mogadishu, which is located inside Abgal country, Abgal clansmen have for long been a dominant force in society (see further actor description for Abgal clan).

The Forces of Hussein Ali Ahmed have been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence
