SUMMARY
The Zeyle (also known as Zayse, Zeyse, Sese and Zergulla) is a little known ethnic group, mainly residing in present-day Arba Minch Zuria woreda (district) in SNNP (Southern Nationalities, Nations and People’s) region’s Gamo Gofa zone, which is situated in southern Ethiopia. The group, which is small, numbering only some 19 000, base its economy on a mix of agriculture and herding. Furthermore, during the dry season they also engage in fishing to supplement their diet.
In Zeyle culture it is important for young men to attain warrior status, and boys are taught how to use spears at an early age. Traditionally young men wishing to marry were expected to present their future brides with parts of a man that they had killed. Apart from being part of the ceremonies surrounding marriages, this tradition was also a way for young men to become full-fledged adults. While this tradition is still carried out, wild animals are now used instead of humans.
The Zeyle have been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
