SUMMARY

JVA faction (Juba Valley Alliance faction) is a group that for a short period of time in 2003 and 2004 opposed the JVA under the leadership of Barre Adan Shir “Hiirale”, and was most likely led by JVA colonel Abdi Egal. There is very little information available on the JVA faction, but it seems to be a loosely organised group, that rather spontaneously emerged as a reaction to dissatisfaction with the JVA leadership. The immediate trigger for the uprising against the JVA appears to be JVA’s successful attempts to dissolve roadblocks set up by JVA militiamen on their own initiative, JVA’s generally growing focus on internal discipline and JVA’s new policy to disarm parts of their own army.

The JVA faction is likely to have ceased to exist and to have reintegrated into JVA in early 2004.
