SUMMARY

The All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) was formed in September 1998. In the 1999 elections, it formed an electoral pact with the Alliance for Democracy (AD). ANPP was originally named the All People’s Party (APP), but changed its name after it merged with a faction of the United Nigeria People’s Party (UNPP) in 2002.

ANPP originated in a number of Igbo and Hausa/Fulani political associations. Many of the founding members had been supporters of Sani Abacha, the former military ruler who died in 1998. The party draws much of its support from northern Nigeria, and has a conservative standpoint in most issues. ANPP came in second to the biggest party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the 1999, 2003 and 2007 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The supporters of ANPP have been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
