SUMMARY

The Ikpanya are one of nine clans inhabiting their own administrative areas within Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area (LGA) in Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria. They belong to the Ibibio ethnic group, which is a mainly Christian-adhering group that depends largely on farming. Although the Ibibio is a minority population constituting 2.2% of the total Nigerian population according to 2013 estimates, it has political influence within Akwa Ibom because it numerically dominates the state. Ibiono Ibom LGA had a population of 188 605 in 2006 but was projected to reach 265 000 by 2016. It is located in the east of Akwa Ibom state and shares a border with Cross River state.
