SUMMARY

Muslims (CAR) is a group label encompassing all people of this faith in Central African Republic and it is often defined in relation to an adversary or out-group. The Muslim community is a heterogeneous group divided along ethnic, cultural, lingual, and economic lines.

The Muslim population is a minority in Central African Republic constituting 15% of the total population as of 2018. Muslims predominately inhabit northern parts of the Central African Republic and rely on herding for their livelihood. Muslim enclaves also exist in other areas of the country, such as PK5 outside of Bangui.

Religious violence between the Christian and Muslim communities in Central African Republic has been intrinsically connected with violence between formally-organized groups such as the FPRC, otherwise known as anti-Seleka, which is religiously-dominated by Muslims.
