SUMMARY

Yussuf Hajji Nur was a judge in the autonomous region of Puntland in north eastern Somalia in the late 1990s and early 2000s. When Puntland’s president, Abdullahi Yusuf, tried to extend his presidential period with another three years the, then, Chief Justice of Puntland, proclaimed himself president.

Yussuf Haji Nur had the backing of clan elders, who agreed to put him as acting president. In November 2001, following elections where all major clans in Puntland took part, Yussuf Hajji Nur was replaced by Jama Ali Jama as the president of Puntland.
