SUMMARY

UNPP (United Nigeria Peoples Party) is a political party in Nigeria. The information concerning the party is scarce. The party did, in the turbulent election of 2003, get 2,8% of the popular vote. This entitled the party to two of 360 seats in the House of Representatives of Nigeria and no seat in the Senate.

UNPP, as well as other Nigerian political parties, has been involved in various forms of intermixing of politics and violence in the past. This violence was mostly carried out by armed youth pushing the agenda through the use of intimidation and the creation of chaos in order to make the holding of free and fair elections difficult. This was commonplace during the elections of 2003 and 2004 and was consequently not an action that was unique for this particular actor.

UNPP has its strongest support in the southern parts of Nigeria, the costal areas. Chairman of the UNPP is Mallam Selah Jambo. It is unclear to what extent he can be held responsible of the violence leading up to the 2003 election. It is however clear that the party did, if not encourage, definitely not condemn, the pre-election violence.

The supporters of UNPP have been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
