SUMMARY
The Muslims in Nigeria are a loosely put together congregation of people that adhere to the Islam faith. The group is perhaps mostly defined in relation to an adversary, or an out group. The overarching description Muslims does not include all Muslims in Nigeria; rather it is a product of the reporting from the conflicts that include religion as markers of belonging. The non-state conflicts in Nigeria are often fought between different ethnic groups, which may, or may not adhere to different faiths; it is however, due to limited information, difficult to disaggregate some of the non-state conflicts to the desired level, i.e. ethnic groups. The group is, because of their ad hoc nature, not lead by one single person; rather, they assemble when threatened by an outside actor.
Islam is alongside Christianity the largest religion in Nigeria.
The Muslims (Nigeria) have been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
