SUMMARY
Bari is an ethnic group that lives in several countries: Southern Sudan (South Sudan after its independence in 2011), Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
The group is estimated to have a total population of around 700 000 with the majority living in Southern Sudan (South Sudan after its independence in 2011) in the south close to the border of Uganda. Bari is a Nilotic group and the language of the group is also called Bari. Their staple crop is millet, and they also keep cattle. The group is made up of 150 patrilineal clans and the group has several “big men” rather than a chief. The Bari is a group that has farming as their main livelihood.
Bari has been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
