Summary of conflict Israel - Yemen

A direct confrontation between Israel and the Sanaa-based Ansarallah Government of Yemen (commonly known as Houthis, and not to be confused with the internationally recognized government of Yemen, called the Forces of the Presidential Leadership Council) has been ongoing since Israel declared its intent to eliminate Ansarallah's leadership on 26 December 2024.

Tension had been high since Ansarallah, a member of the Iranian-led ‘Axis of Resistance’, began shooting at international shipping, supposedly connected to Israel, in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb straits and Gulf of Aden in solidarity with Hamas in the Gaza war that erupted after the 7 October 2023 attack into Israel. The Ansarallah government had participated as a secondary warring party to Hamas in that conflict, regularly sending drones and missiles into Israel, and getting bombed in return. The Ansarallah movement has been coded as the Government of Yemen since their capture of the capital of Yemen, Sanaa, in 2015 during the Yemeni civil war, in line with UCDP definitions. Israel declaration of a government incompatibility against the Ansarallah government, by declaring its intent to "hunt down all the Houthi leaders and strike them" made the interstate conflict between Israel and Yemen take precedent over Yemen's secondary warring support for Hamas.

The conflict escalated in May 2025, as Israel launched a campaign of airstrikes on Yemen within hours of a ceasefire being declared in the United Kingdom, United States - Yemen interstate conflict. After the strikes in May, Israel launched an even more intense second round of strikes in August and September. On 28 August, Israeli airstrikes killed around a dozen ministers of the Ansarallah government, including the Prime Minister and Chief of Staff. With the signing of a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in October, the Yemeni strikes on vessels in the Red Sea and on Israel ended, and Israeli airstrikes on Yemen came to a halt.
