The conflict over territory between the Government of Jordan and IS became active for the first time in 2016. Security forces clashes with IS militants on several occasions, including in December when IS militants laid siege to the Crusader-era castle in Karak for a number of hours. 14 people, including civilians, were killed in the clashes.
