SUMMARY
The one-sided violence by ADF and Mayi Mayi Mayangose took place in 2014 in the Beni territory of the DR Congo. 2014 was a peak year of ADF attacks against civilians but ADF attacks in the Beni area were mixed with attacks by other actors, for example Mayi Mayi Mayangose, and parts of the government forces. On 20 November 2014 three villages, Vemba, Tepiomba and Masulukwede about 10 km east of Mavivi were attacked by assailants identified as ADF and Mayi Mayi Mayangose. Survivors of the attacks described how the assailants arrived in the villages, introduced themselves as Congolese soldiers and shared beers with the locals before forcing their victims to sit on the ground, and tying their arms behind their backs with strips of rubber from bicycle tires. One witness saw the leader of the group talking on a cell phone before he ordered the killings to start. ADF and Mayi Mayi Mayangose used axes to kill the civilians.
According to Mayi Mayi Mayangose, the objective of killings were to turn people against the government and when the population would be tired of the massacres and the insecurity Mzee Mbusa Nyamwisi would be president.
The ADF, Mayi Mayi Mayangose coalition first became active as a one-sided actor in UCDP data in 2014, when the one-sided violence resulted in more than 25 civilian deaths. The threshold was reached on 20 November that year when the coalition attacked villages in Beni territory, resulting in at least 119 deaths.
