The two subgroups of the Dinka; Luac Jang Dinka and Awan Dinka, have been involved in reciprocal cattle rustling and counter-attacks for many years.
The non-state conflict between Luac Jang Dinka and Awan Dinka is first included in UCDP data in 2009. In August that year fighting in Tonj town resulted in at least 30 battle-related deaths.
