SUMMARY
The situation between the Mangweni clan and the Mgodini clan in South Africa was tense after two members of one of the clans were killed by the other clan (which clan was the initial perpetrator remains unclear). Two weeks after this event, retaliation took place, and a battle broke out between the two clans. During this one-day battle 24 people died.
While at the time of this battle the situation in the Natal region was tense due to the conflict between the IFP (Inkatha Freedom Party) and ANC (African National Congress), it seems not likely that the battle between the Mangweni clan and the Mgodini clan was related to that. Rather, it is argued that the conflict could have been sparked by a dispute over tribal land.
Victims were shot, hacked and stabbed to death. Additionally, over 100 houses had been set on fire at the time of the clash between the two clans.
The battle took place in Loskop, near Estcourt in the Natal region of South Africa.
The non-state conflict between the Mangweni clan and the Mgodini clan is first included in 1993. In October that year, violence between the two parties had resulted in over 25 battle-related deaths.
