SUMMARY

The conflict between the Wagia subclan of Takima and the Wayai subclan of Takima started over a land dispute and lasted for about two weeks in 2001. The land which they were fighting ownership of was situated within the Hides project area, which was one of the areas along the Papua New Guinea-Queensland gas pipeline route. However, it was unclear whether the fighting was connected to the project. It is common that violence erupts between rival clans in remote areas of Papua New Guinea. The tribespeople had been killed by being hacked to death with axes. The violence remained within the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea.

The non-state conflict between Wagia subclan of Takima and the Wayai subclan of Takima was first included in UCDP data in 2001, which was also the only year the conflict was active. In May of that year violent clashes, where people were hacked to death, erupted in the Komo-Magarima district, resulting in 25 deaths.
