SUMMARY

Already in the 1970s there were strong tensions and conflicts between the predecessor of SLA and Shiites. The conflict between the Shiite organization Hezbollah (Party of God) and SLA (South Lebanon Army) however took a start in 1992. SLA had been appointed, and supported, by Israel to protect the security zone and keep possible threats against Israeli interests afar.

The Iranian backed Hezbollah committed a number of bomb attacks against the SLA forces in the security zone, or in its close vicinity, almost all throughout the 1990s. There were also a number of clashes between patrols of Hezbollah and SLA soldiers.

The conflict was terminated in early 2000, following the exit of the Israeli forces from the south of Lebanon. Without the support of its ally, SLA decided to leave its posts and disband.

The non-state conflict between Hezbollah and SLA is first included in UCDP data in 1992. In October, following a number of bomb attacks throughout the year, the conflict reached more than 25 battle-related deaths.

No recorded fatalities for this entity.
