SUMMARY

The conflict between the Yakuman tribe and the Yangukim tribe, also known as Yangakun tribe, broke out in August of 2025 when a man from Yangukim was shot by a man from the Yakuman tribe. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but some claim the fighting was connected to political rivalry which turned into tribal fighting. By the beginning of September, clashes between the two tribes had led to a death toll of ten people. Later, in November, the number of fatalities had reached 31. A ceasefire agreement was eventually signed, shortly followed by the signing of a peace agreement on November 21st. This was focused on ending the violence and prosecuting those responsible.

The characteristics of the violence is largely unknown, the few cases where it was specified were shootings. Other incidents connected to the clashes also occurred, such as burning of property, although this did not result in fatalities. The violence remained localized to the Wapenamanda district in Enga province.

The Yakuman-Yangykim dyad first became active in UCDP in 2025. In November that year, fighting in the Wapenamanda district of Enga had resulted in 31 fatalities since the clashes broke out, making it active in the UCDP data.
