SUMMARY
The conflict between Black and Indian started on 12 July 2021. Inhabitants of the mostly Indian town Phoenix armed themselves to defend themselves from looters. Tensions rose when people at checkpoints started profiling people, determining who could and could not enter the town. Clashes ensued in which most of the casualties were Black.
The non-state conflict between the two groups was first included in UCDP data in 2021, which was also the only year the conflict was active. In July of that year violent clashes in terms of shooting, stabbing and burning erupted in the KwaZulu-Natal province, resulting in over 30 deaths.
