SUMMARY

A number of clashes took place between the Akul tribe and the Kambrip tribe in the Kandep district in the Enga province, in Papua New Guinea between June and November 2012. The clashes followed an election result dispute between the two tribal leaders of the groups; Alfred Manase (Akul tribe) and Don Polye (Kambrip tribe). The leaders’ involvement in the clashes were reportedly unclear since they both resided in the capital, far away from the fighting.

The clashes reportedly began when members of the Akul tribe killed a member of the Kambrip tribe. Kambrip tribesmen then retaliated and killed a member of the Akul tribe.

The non-state conflict between Akul tribe and the Kambrip tribe is included in UCDP data in 2012. On 29 November 2012, clashes between the two tribes resulted in more than 25 battle-related deaths.
