SUMMARY

Clashes between groups of Northern Sudanese and Southern Sudanese broke out in early August 2005 following the death of John Garang, leader of SPLM/A and then newly appointed vice president of Sudan. The clashes lasted for a few days and resulted in more than 100 battle-related deaths. Fighting mainly took place in the capital Khartoum but clashes also erupted in cities in the southern part of the country such as Juba and Malakal.

The non-state conflict between Northern Sudanese and Southern Sudanese is first included in UCDP data in 2005. In August of that year, clashes between the two groups resulted in more than 100 battle-related deaths.
