Comment on date when dyad reached 25 battle related deaths: UIFSA first became active as a one-sided actor in UCDP data in 2001, when the one-sided violence resulted in at least 25 civilian deaths. The threshold was reached during November and December of that year when between 200 and 1000 supporters of the Taleban were reportedly killed by UIFSA's advancing forces. UIFSA probably perpetrated acts of one-sided violence before this year, but sources are so unreliable and the circumstances of deaths so unclear that no clear-cut conclusion can be drawn in this regard.

Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The discrepancy between the high and best estimate is caused by the difficulties in finding reliable sources on the number of Taleban supporters that were killed in the large-scale cleansing of Afghanistans north that UIFSA perpetrated in the last months of the year.
Comment on Active: In late 2001 UIFSA pushed back the forces of the government and captured large swathes of territory throughout Afghanistan, especiall in the northern and central provinces.
During and after these conquests several hundred, possibly thousands, of Taleban supporters were either executed or suffocated to death whilst being transported or abandoned in containers in the deserts of northern Afghanistan.
