Comment on Active: In 1998, the one-sided violence conducted by the Senegalese army against civilians reached the threshold of more than 25 victims. Generally, the army conducted extrajudicial executions of alleged sympathisers with Casamance separatists.
The most severe incident occurred in the village of Djifanghor where security forces massacred over 30 villagers. The days preceding the massacre, the MFDC had conducted a number of attacks in the area. Soldiers arrived in the village with a list of people, including women and children, from the Diola ethnic group, who had allegedly been denounced for supporting the rebels.
