Comment on Activity: The first reports of one-sided violence carried out by MPCI came in September, in the wake of the outbreak of the armed conflict. Through the rest of the year there were a few more attacks reported, two of which involved the killing of a large number of people. In October the rebels killed over 60 relatives of gendarmes in Bouaké and in early November they targeted and killed some 35 young people when attacking Sémien village.

Terminated: NO

2003 Conflict Archive

Comment on Activity: The most prominent incident in 2003 was the killing of at least 50 young women. After a tour of the western part of the country, MPCI leader Guillaume Soro decided that the Liberians and Sierra Leoneans fighting for MPCI’s allies MPIGO and MJP were a political liability. He subsequently ordered a purge and the foreign fighters were driven out of the country. During their time in Ivory Coast the Liberians and Sierra Leoneans had kidnapped many women and kept them as sex slaves. When they were forced to flee they left these women behind and they were subsequently targeted in reprisal killings by MPCI.

Terminated: NO
