Comment on Active: The Balanda - Dinka fighting in 2012 erupted because of disagreements over relocation of Wau County administrative headquarters. The Balanda resisted this relocation while the Dinka was supportive. This led to ethnic animosity that was used by different politicians. The animosity led to fighting between the communities in December 2012. The resistance to relocate the administrative headquarters also led to demonstrations. In these demonstrations the police shot against the demonstrators leading to about ten being killed (see one-sided violence Government of South Sudan 2012). As the government of Sudan is dominated by the Dinka this increased the grievance that the Balanda felt.
The most violent event of this dyad in 2012 took place in Parajallah 48 miles south west of Wau. Parajallah is located in the Bagari area; the proposed new location for the headquarters Wau County. In this incident more than two dozen Dinka civilians were killed by attacking Balanda.
