Comment on Active: In late 2011, longstanding tensions between the Ezza and Ezillo communities erupted in large-scale violence as an Ezillo community in Ishielu district was attacked by Ezza gunmen. The attack took place on 31 December and resulted in at least 50 deaths. The state governor, Martin Elechi, later accused some traditional rulers and local politicians of having advance knowledge of the attack, but not doing anything to stop it. Security forces were deployed to restore calm following the violence.
