2009 Dyad Archive
Comment on Active: During 2009, some Orakzai clans and sub-tribes managed to establish a lashkar (a tribal militia) to fight TTP (Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan) and avenge the 10 October 2008 bomb attack that killed an important number of Orakzai leaders. Further, the Orakzai were hoping of possible governmental support for the lashkar, and were enthused by a possible weakening of TTP, especially as Baitullah Mehsud, the leader of TTP, died in a US attack on 5 August 2009.
Throughout 2009, however, the strength of the lashkar was relatively low with no governmental support for the lashkar. Most clashes were low in intensity, mainly consisting of bombing or torching known TTP buildings or engaging in gun-battles with TTP militants.
