Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The large discrepancy between the low and high number for deaths stems from the difference between the aggregate data provided by the Indian authorities, and those that could be discerned from reported events.
Comment on Active: As the fighting between the Kuki and the Paite was a spillover of the larger Kuki-Naga conflict that engulfed Manipur since 1993, tactics employed were similar. As such, most prevalent were assaults on villages, leading to arson, wide-scale destruction of property and displacement of population, as well as ambushes and attacks on means of transport used by the other ethnic groups. The conflict intensified as a pattern of retaliatory attacks became established within the affected communities. However, throughout mid and late 1997, talks were held between the various actors present within the conflict (tribal councils, tribal leaders, ethnic insurgent groups), with the goal of restoring peace.
