Comment on Active: In April 1994 a longstanding conflict between Xawaadle clan and Habr Gedir clan, both of the Hawiye clan family, over the control of Mogadishu airport escalated into violent clashes. Both groups were at the time affiliated with parties involved in the political conflict in Somalia, Hawadle clan being aligned with Ali Mahdi’s USC/SSA (United Somali Congress/Somali Salvation Army) and Habar Gidir making up the backbone of Mohamed Farah Aideed’s USC/SNA (United Somali Congress/Somali National Army). The fighting took the form of fierce street clashes with UN personnel getting caught in the crossfire. Besides the clashes in Mogadishu, Xawaadle clan members also assassinated a high profile Habar Gidir member in Beled Weyne, a Hawadle dominated city in central Somalia which fell under USC/SNA control in 1994. This attack spurred revenge attacks by Habar Gidir clan members on Xawaadle members in the city.
The fighting in Mogadishu continued for a couple of weeks after its initiation. While there are reports of new clashes in July that year these latter clashes seem not to have had a deadly outcome.
