Comment on Activity: At Moscows Domodedowo Airport a major suicide attack was launched, which claimed the lives of 37 civilians. The Caucasus Emirates leader Doku Umarov claimed responsibility for the attack vowing "blood and tears" in Russia if it refuses to abandon its mostly Muslim North Caucasus territories. In addition, minor attacks occurred in the North Caucasus mainly targeting people whose occupation was against the Islamist extremists belief. Examples include a headmaster who was opposed to his female students wearing headscarves and probably a folk healer and the owner of a shop selling alcohol.
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The perpetrators of attacks in the North Caucasus are often unknown and the real number of killings might be higher. Our estimates iinclude all attacks against civilians where the Caucasus Emirate claimed responsibility. Also included are cases where the tactic and targets were the same as in previous years and were the rebels were suspected of perpretating the attack.
