2007 Conflict Archive
Comment on Activity: During 2007 the TTP mainly targeted residents who they accused of being U.S. spies. The victims were often found shot or beheaded, with a note close to them warning others of collaborating with the U.S. forces in the neighboring country Afghanistan. One of the deadliest attacks during the year took place in May, when the TTP exploded a bomb in a hotel in Peshawar. The reason of the attack is unclear, but the owner of the hotel was a Shia Muslim, a group often targeted by the Sunni Muslim TTP. At least 25 people were killed in the attack.

2008 Conflict Archive
Comment on Activity: During 2008 the TTP frequently attacked civilians in the northwestern parts of Pakistan. Many of the victims had been accused of being U.S. spies or informers. They were found shot or beheaded with notes close to them warning others of collaborating with the U.S. forces in the neighboring country Afghanistan. The TTP also attacked tribal leaders and anti-Taleban warlords on several occasions. One of the largest attacks during the year occurred in October when the TTP attacked a group of anti-insurgent tribesmen who had gathered in a tribal area for a meeting. At least 82 people, many of them tribal leaders, were killed in the attack.

2009 Conflict Archive
Comment on Activity: In 2009, the level of one-sided violence committed by TTP remained on a high level, claiming approximately as many lives as in the previous year. Also the patterns of the violence largely remained the same. Among TTP’s victims were foreigners and civilians opposing the Pakistani Taleban, for example representatives of political parties, journalists reporting about anti-Taleban movements or clerics who publically opposed TTP. Moreover, many civilians were killed after being accused of spying for the U.S. In addition, TTP militants staged bomb attacks against busses and suicide bombers attacked Shia mosques and processions, claiming the lives of many civilians.

2010 Conflict Archive
Comment on Activity: In 2010, the violence committed by TTP militants against civilians escalated further and the number of lives claimed in suicide attacks, ambushes and roadside bombs increased considerably. Compared to previous years, many more civilians were killed in 2010, but the patterns of violence resembled those witnessed earlier. Among the civilians killed by TTP militants were many who opposed the Pakistani Taleban, such as tribal elders, politicians of moderate parties and not least moderate religious figures. Moreover, many civilians were killed after being accused of spying for the Pakistani or U.S. government. Sectarian violence against Shia and other religious minorities that do not adhere to the radical interpretation of the Sunni Islam that is supported by TTP has also increased. In several of the most atrocious attacks, close to one hundred civilians were killed when TTP militants attacked large processions or public events.

2011 Conflict Archive
Comment on Activity: During 2011, TTP continued to carry out attacks against civilians. However, compared to previous years, the level of violence was considerably lower and fewer civilians were killed. TTPs attacks followed similar patterns as in previous years. Several civilians were killed after being accused to serve as spies for the U.S. or other foreign governments or because they were openly opposing the Pakistani Taleban. Also, many civilian drivers of trucks supplying the NATO forces in Afghanistan were killed during attacks against supply routes. The majority of the civilian victims were killed in suicide attacks carried out at mosques and shrines.

Comment on Activity: TTP greatly increased the number of attacks on civilians in 2013. Suicide bombings in Peshawar, Kurram, and Hangu agencies resulted in dozens of civilian deaths. The spike in the number of attacks and fatalities can be traced to the elections that took place in the country. TTP warned the population it controlled to boycott the elections and constantly attacked voting polls and targeted election officials and candidates. Also, TTP specifically targeted the minority populations, namely the Shia and the Christians.
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: Mostly suicide bombings and remote controlled explosives, election violence, and targeted assasinations of influential figures.
