Comment on Active: In the conflict in DRC most Mayi Mayi militias have supported the Kinshasa government against RCD-Goma and their Rwandan allies. In the Maniema and Kartanga provinces Mayi Mayi launched constant attacks on the RCD-Goma all through 2002. After Rwanda withdrew from the DRC in October 2002 Mayi Mayi got the upper hand in the fighting and was able to take control of Uvira.

Comment on Active: During the first half of 2003, the RCD and Mayi Mayi militia continued to battle for control or Uvira, which had been captured by Mayi Mayi in October 2002, and other areas in South Kivu. RCD retook Uvira in January, and launched a major offensive against the Mayi Mayi. The “final act” of the Inter-Congolese Dialogue, signed in April, failed to halt the fighting in South Kivu. In October, however, the RCD and the Mayi Mayi signed a MONUC-negotiated ceasefire agreement, and fighting abated during the fall.
