2003 Dyad Archive
Comment on Active: In November 2003, clashes broke out in the contested Miesso wereda (district) in West Hareghe amid rumours about the federal government’s intention to incorporate the area into one or the other of the Oromiya and Somali states through a referendum. Triggered by a dispute over revenues from the local stimulant Khat, Somalis shot an Oromo man to death, leading to clashes between Oromo and Somali tribes. The clashes were stopped by intervention by the defence forces, but in December, the forces withdrew from Bordede town and clashes again broke out after Oromo gunmen killed a Somali man and Somali, together with Afar from neighbouring areas, retaliated and briefly besieged the town, withdrawing after renewed defence force intervention. Together, the clashes in November and December led to over 30 deaths.

2005 Dyad Archive
Comment on Active: In January 2005, clashes again broke out between Oromo and Somali in West Hareghe after a referendum in October 2004 failed to solve the issue of border delimitation. According to reports, a Somali clan armed and mobilised by the government was responsible for the attack. Renewed clashes in February and March-June spilled over into East Harerghe and stopped only after intervention by the national defence forces. There were also reports of clashes in Borena zone, southern Oromiya, in May, but it remains unclear whether these clashes were connected to those in West and East Harerghe as well as how many were killed.
