Comment on Active: Fighting between the forces of these two rivalling warlords broke out in late July 2002, in the Shindand district of the western Herat province. Fighting continued sporadically throughout the rest of the year, until a ceasefire was mediated by coalition and central government officials. The main battles stood over the control of the strategic Shindand airbase and a few lucrative customs posts on the border with Iran.

Comment on Active: Only one major clash was recorded for 2004; Amanullah Khan’s successful attack on the Shindand airbase which was captured by his forces. Shortly after Afghan army troops were stationed at the base to separate the warring factions. As a consequence the fighting died down, and Amanullah Khan was apprehended and placed in house arrest in Kabul.
