Comment on Activity: Infighting between factions of the La Familia Cartel began following the arrest of the cartels leader in 2010. Violence between the La Familia Cartel and Los Caballeros Templarios first reached 25 deaths in 2011 after fighting in the important Pacific port city of Lazaro Cardenas.
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The cartels employed brutal tactics which included torture, dismemberment and body dumps in addition to regular shootouts.

Comment on Activity: Despite reports to contrary, the La Familia Cartel maintained some of its operational capacity into 2012 and the two cartels continued to fight each other. This sustained conflict first resulted in over 25 deaths in 2011.
