Comment on Activity: In 2002, years of ethnic tension between the Burkinabé and the Guéré communities led to the outbreak of an ethnic conflict. Native ethnicities, such as the Guéré, blamed the immigrant community of stealing their lands. As a result, members of the Guéré ethnicity often turned to violence to oust immigrants from valuable lands. In the end of June and the beginning of July, the native ethnicity clashed with immigrants originating from the Burkina Faso. Fighting erupted in the small village of Yrouzon located close to the city of Duékoué. In September, the outbreak of the first Ivorian intra-state conflict further deteriorated the situation for the immigrant community. Burkinabé people were branded as rebels and enemies of the state by the native ethnicities. Only a couple of months after the outbreak of the intra-state conflict, the Guéré and the Burkinabé once again clashed in the department of Duékoué. After a week of heavy fighting, the conflict had claimed the lives of an estimated 27 people.
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The high discrepancy between the best and the low estimates comes from the fact that some deaths have not been confirmed. However, the information is considered enough reliable to be put in the best estimate.

Comment on Activity: In 2003, the intra-state war had exacerbated the ethnic tension between the Burkinabé and the Guéré community. In the beginning of May, army sources reported that at least 100 people had been killed in several days of attacks by immigrants from Burkina Faso. After the two communities had clashed the year before, the conflict between the two communities had evolved from disagreement over land ownership into the outbreak of a full scale ethnic conflict. In November, as the Guéré and the Burkinabé once more took to arms in the village of Bangolo, French soldiers intervened to separate the two warring parties.
