Comment on Activity: In fall 2010, fierce fighting broke out between members of the Mangal and Bangesh tribes in the Kurram Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Agency (FATA). The reasons for the outbreak of violence between the tribes were disputes over water and land ownership in the remote region close to the Afghan border. Attempts by the political administration and the security forces to stop the armed clashes and to broker a ceasefire had failed.
Fighting escalated in September and reached its peak later that month. In late September, local tribal elders were able to broker a ceasefire between the tribes. The truce was signed on 27 September and put an end to the armed clashes. Sporadic minor clashes and violations of the ceasefire were reported after the signing of the agreement.
