Comment on Activity: The one-sided violence carried out by the government of Papua New Guinea in 1996 was intimately connected to the armed conflict fought in the country.
In one incident, soldiers based near Kunua killed 8 former members of the BRA (Bougainville Revolutionary Army) when they were called in by a local chief to sort out a dispute. The commander of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force later claimed to have ordered an investigation into this event and stressed that any extra-judicial killings would be treated as criminal offences.
In another event, troops killed 9 church workers and their children when they fired several mortars on a church in the village Malapita, where people were gathering for morning prayers.
