2006 Conflict Archive
Comment on Activity: The conflict between Pokot and Samburu was mainly active in spring 2006 due to a series of cattle raids and retaliation attacks. The outbreak of violence is generally considered to be linked to the hard drought that hit the Rift Valley Province in 2005/2006. This drought considerably diminished the herds, forcing the two groups to restock, which was partly done through raiding cattles from other groups.
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: This number reflects the secured and confirmed deaths according to strict UCDP rules. It is likely that the actual number of deaths is higher, since unconfimred sources and broad estimates indicate up to 150 deaths.
