Comment on Activity: The violence that allowed for the inclusion of this conflict in the UCDP data was one clash that took place in April 2003. The situation was confusing, and each side accused the other of committing the violence. It was however clear that over thirty people had been killed as a result of electoral violence between the two groups. Prior to the violence PDP and UNPP supporters had clashed prompting PDP members to flee the town of Bassambiri. These exiled political supporters were allowed back to the town, a pledge that was signed by both political parties. When the PDP supporters returned they were met by hostile UNPP supporters who chanted hateful slogans and paraded through the town breaking bottles, destroying PDP campaign material. This escalated into clashes which did not succumb until the military intervened after two nights of fighting.
